Certain substances are more addictive than others. Individuals who experienced psychological, emotional or physical abuse are more likely to become drug addicts. People who don’t receive adequate nurture as children or who are more emotionally sensitive may be more susceptible. These factors won’t always lead to substance misuse or dependency or any other addictive behaviour, but they can increase vulnerability. Cigarettes cause lung cancer which has a one out of ten survival rate. Various factors, such as your genetic makeup, your personality and peer pressure, affect your likelihood of becoming addicted to a drug. Risk of full blown addiction is higher for drugs such as cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine because of their ability to create dependence after just a few uses.

Environmental factors can also have influence, individuals who have been removed from their alcoholic parents and raised by non addicted individuals still show a higher risk for developing an drug addiction themselves. Pharmacological and behavioral characteristics that determine tobacco addiction are similar to those that determine addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Smoking further increases the amount of fatty acids, glucose, and various hormones in the blood. Tobacco contributes to 30 percent of all cancers.
